Bricsys Releases BricsCAD V16

http://www.bricsys.com
GENT, Belgium, Oct 28, 2015 - Bricsys announces the release of its flagship design software, BricsCAD V16. The innovative CAD system powers 2D drafting, 3D modeling, sheet metal design, and BIM architecture -- all on the world standard .dwg file format. It is available on Windows, and soon Mac and Linux.

New 2D and 3D Functions in V16

BricsCAD V16 significantly expands the function of the unique Quad cursor so that it also draws objects, in addition to editing them. The Quad is easily customized in V16.

Users make better drawings through the new dynamically associative array function that creates and edits linear, rectangular, polar, 3D array, and arrays along paths. As well, transparency can be applied to objects, layers, and plotted out. Text is enhanced multi-column paragraphs and automatic stacking of fractions.

Now map tiles can be placed from online cartographic services, and drawings can be located accurately using geographic coordinates.

BricsCAD V16 expands 3D object creation to 3D surfaces, which can be edited just like 3D solids, including those imported from other CAD programs. The new release imports and heals assemblies from MCAD programs like Solidworks and Inventor; in addition, it imports 3D models from the popular SketchUp conceptual modeling tool, and BIM data from IFC files.

BricsCAD BIM (building information model) for architectural design synchronizes 3D models with 2D sections, plans, and details, and reads and writes IFC files from other BIM systems. All building materials and compositions in the BIM database are accessible through the dockable BIM panel. BricsCAD creates room objects in V16 that are bounded by wall objects. Choose windows and doors from the library, or else create your own by setting parameters in the Properties panel.

The redesigned drawing generation feature lets users generate 2D drawings, details, sections, and sheet sets in seconds from 3D, BIM, and sheet metal models using styles.

BricsCAD Sheet Metal

In BricsCAD V16, the sheet metal functions become an optional add-on. New functions in V16 include automatic feature coloring, lofted bends, and additional junction and relief shapes. The all-new batch processing facilities allows users to quickly produce families of sheet metal parts of different sizes. Support for CAM systems is extended to CYBELEC and DELEM.

Hundreds of Third-party Applications

Bricsys’ strong relationship with third-party application developers means users have access to more than 400 applications running on top of BricsCAD. Click here, to browse the online app store.

The extensive BricsCAD development platform boasts nine programming interfaces, allowing developers to rapidly port applications from other .dwg-based CAD programs, usually without modifying any source code. To learn more about the easy 1-2-3 process to join and post your add-on software, visit www.bricsys.com/bricscad/developers/.

Pricing and Availability

The English version of BricsCAD V16 for Windows is available now. Additional languages and platforms will be released in the weeks to come. The free download provides a 30-day trial of all functions of the Platinum edition.

Delcam Releases ArtCAM Pro 2015 R2

http://www.delcam.com
BIRMINGHAM, UK, Oct 22, 2015 - The 2015 R2 version of Delcam’s ArtCAM Pro artistic CADCAM software features improvements in design and machining, including the ability to create support structures for 3D Printing, easier designing with vectors, more design options with real-time updating and faster machining simulations.

Unlike most other CADCAM systems, ArtCAM Pro is aimed at skilled artisans rather than engineers and requires much less knowledge of engineering or computing. It has been particularly successful in the sign-making, woodworking and engraving industries. In these areas and in other artistic applications, ArtCAM Pro allows users to increase productivity, improve quality and deliver new designs more quickly, by combining their craft skills and creativity with the power and precision of computer-aided manufacturing.

The main enhancement for the new version of ArtCAM Pro is the ability to create support structures for 3D Printing. Users can generate intelligent support structures, either manually or automatically, and can also use batch assembly for the printing of multiple items. 3D Printing offers ArtCAM users an alternative route to machining for the production of complex models.

ArtCAM users that design with vectors will benefit from two new options. Firstly, snap hints now appear to help in locating hard-to-find snap points within vectors when creating designs. Secondly, the thickness of vectors can be changed, in either the 2D or 3D view, making it easier to visualize the design.

Accuracy will also be helped by the addition of rulers in the 3D view to make it easier to create precise artwork and to position elements of the piece.

The ability to overlap and intersect reliefs has been enhanced with a new option to interactively blend the reliefs. This allows relief clipart to be pulled up or pushed down in the Z axis to give a better blend with another 3D design.

The range of modelling tools that operate in real time has been extended to include the ability to create smooth domed shapes or domes with a center line ridge, and the option to make intricate weaves. Real-time operation makes it easier to create exactly the effect that is required and shortens design times.

The tools for assembly modelling have been improved by making it easier and quicker to drag or rotate elements of the assembly into position. It has also been made simpler to undo any changes.

The creation of complex designs by grouping relief layers together has also been made easier. For example, it is easier to combine the front and back of a miniature or a sculpture. In addition, relief slicing can now output the slices as DXF files, making laser cutting of tall items easier.

The main machining enhancement in the new release is significantly faster machining simulations thanks to a new algorithm that uses the specialist processor in modern graphics cards to calculate multiple operations simultaneously. This gives major benefits over standard multi-threading.

Another area of improvement is corner machining, where fillets can be added to vectors to allow more accurate machining of slots. In a related development, loops can be added for creating corners with knife cutting. Finally, two new options are available in the 3D offset strategy. Firstly, it is now possible to spiral from the outside in or from the center outwards. The strategy can reduce tool wear and give better surface finish. Secondly, on-surface links can be used. This reduces the number of plunge and retract moves and so saves machining time. For more information, www.artcam.com/pro.

AVEVA Launches Software Development Apprenticeship

www.aveva.com
CAMBRIDGE, UK, Oct 1, 2015 - AVEVA announced the launch of its new apprenticeship scheme. Starting in October 2015, young people will have the opportunity to begin work as software developers at one of Cambridge’s most successful international software companies. Working with training partner, Firebrand, AVEVA will offer a comprehensive higher education ‘Level 4’ programme, which involves two years job training and carries accreditation from the BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT.

‘We have long been supporters of young people entering industry through our graduate opportunities and internships,’ said Hilary Wright, EVP Human Resources, AVEVA. ‘Not everyone is suited to university education. It is a concern to us that talented potential engineers would miss out on the opportunity of a long and worthwhile career, especially in an area where there is a critical skills shortage. We are delighted that the government has now recognized the need for the software development apprenticeship which gives us the opportunity to offer a highly skilled job role to a young person.’

Skills Minister Nick Boles MP added, ’Businesses are better placed than anyone to train the next generation of workers and will help us deliver 3 million high-quality apprenticeships by 2020. By designing apprenticeships, employers like AVEVA are ensuring that young talented people develop the skills needed to progress up the career ladder and help drive businesses forward.’

AVEVA has offered students and graduates work-placements for a number of years. The current AVEVA graduate program offers up to two years of rotational placements across the business and is endorsed by the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM).

Delcam for SolidWorks 2016 Released

http://www.delcam.com
BIRMINGHAM, UK, Oct 1, 2015 - Delcam has launched the 2016 release of its Delcam for SolidWorks integrated CAM software for SolidWorks. This includes a range of enhancements, in particular more options for the Vortex high-efficiency area-clearance strategy, faster creation of multiple set-ups, more efficient turning and user-interface improvements to make programming even easier and faster.

Delcam for SolidWorks offers Delcam’s proven machining algorithms, which are already used by more than 50,000 customers, fully integrated into the SolidWorks environment. The program looks and behaves like SolidWorks, and offers full associativity so that any changes in the CAD model are reflected automatically in the toolpaths. However, this associativity is more intelligent than that offered in many other integrated CAM systems. Delcam for SolidWorks doesn’t simply modify the existing toolpaths but also reviews the choice of cutting tools and machining strategies, and changes them if necessary.

The 2016 release includes a number of enhancements to the Vortex area-clearance strategy. Vortex gives the fastest safe metal removal from solid carbide tooling, in particular designs that give deeper cuts by using the full flute length as the cutting surface. It produces toolpaths with a controlled engagement angle and so maintains the optimum cutting conditions for the complete roughing cycle, giving faster machining and longer tool life.

The ability has now been added to adjust and fine tune the non-cutting moves of 2.5D and 3D Vortex toolpaths, with options to retract the tool and/or to increase the feedrate. These options can be set individually, or can be combined to achieve an optimum toolpath, with a reduced cycle time.

Other roughing improvements include the ability to take into account any remaining stock on the model during holder collision checking, ensuring that Z-level roughing toolpaths are completely free of tool-holder collisions.

Milling of inside or outside groove features has been upgraded with a number of improvements. These include support for different types of roughing links, wind-fan approach and retract moves for finishing, better gouge checking for plunges and retracts, and tool radius and partline cutter compensation support.

Five-axis swarf machining has been made more flexible with a new option to control the upper and lower Z limits of a simultaneous five-axis swarf toolpath. This is useful if there are limitations on the tool length that can be used or if the step-down needs to be varied for different segments of the toolpath.

In turning, the engage angle can now be set for the lead-in approach move. By controlling the approach move in this way, smoother chip formation and lower cutting forces can be achieved.

Interface improvements include the ability to create additional setups quickly during FeatureRECOGNITION, via a new button in the Feature Wizard. This reduces the overall programming time significantly.
