MSC Apex Cheetah Released for CAE

www.mscsoftware.com NEWPORT BEACH, CA, USA, Mar 28, 2015 - MSC Software Corporation announced a new release of MSC Apex, the company's award winning next generation Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) platform. The MSC Apex Cheetah release introduces:
  • The third release of MSC Apex Modeler - A CAE Specific direct modeling and meshing solution that streamlines CAD clean-up, simplification, and meshing workflow.
  • The first release of MSC Apex Structures - An add-on to MSC Apex Modeler which now expands MSC Apex to a fully integrated and generative structural analysis solution.
The new release enhances the engineer's workflow and daily productivity with many innovative modeling and analysis capabilities, and gives more engineers the ability to perform design analysis.

“Cheetah is a milestone release for MSC Apex, now delivering its first solver integrated solution for interactive and incremental structural analysis,” said Hugues Jeancolas, MSC Apex Product Manager. “Modeling, validating, solving, and exploring designs has never been this efficient and easy. MSC Apex helps users to crush the amount of time that it normally takes to build and validate models, a task that does not add any value to the design process. This frees our users to focus on delivering not just acceptable designs but ones that are optimal - in an environment that is fun to use.”

Key productivity accelerators include:

Geometry clean-up and Meshing
55% of engineers spend more than 40% of their time on geometry clean up and meshing, according to a recent survey conducted with leading manufacturing companies. MSC Apex Modeler continues to deliver breakthrough capabilities to speed the CAD to mesh process and improve productivity with a new Geometry Checks tool, robustness enhancements to Geometry Cleanup Stitching and Surface Auto extend capabilities, a new user interface for De-featuring, and a new Automated Mesh Improve capability and user defined mesh quality criteria. While the previous release, Black Marlin, delivered on ease-of-use, with these enhancements, MSC Apex Cheetah brings productivity and speed, in particular for mid-surface geometry creation, clean-up and meshing.

Solver Validated Modeling

67% of engineers need 2 to 4 solver runs to obtain a converged solution. MSC Apex Cheetah enhances the simulation workflow by delivering an innovative Analysis Readiness tool that allows the user to validate models before submitting the analysis. The Analysis Readiness tool leverages integrated solver methods to check on element quality, proper material and section attribution, part connectivity, and proper loads and constraints definitions. The tool is integrated with the MSC Apex generative framework and automatically updates as the user builds the model. This ensures all models created within the application are always solver compliant and run-ready.

Assembly Representations

MSC Apex Cheetah also enhances the simulation workflow to support large assemblies with the introduction of assembly representations, and glue connections. The concept of assembly representations allows the user to manage multiple configured assemblies of parts, and enables a divide and conquer approach to incrementally define, validate, and analyze large, complex assemblies. With Cheetah, users will also now be able to manage, attribute, assemble, and analyze orphan meshes with the support for MSC Nastran bulk data files (BDF) import.

Generative Linear Structural Analysis

With MSC Apex Cheetah, users can now define scenarios, loads, and boundary conditions, analyze, and post process results for Linear Static and Normal Modes. MSC Apex Structures combines Computational Parts and Assemblies' technology with a generative framework, which enables interactive and incremental analysis. With Computational Parts and Assemblies, MSC Apex is a true parts-based solution, where each part behavioral representation (stiffness, mass, and damping) can be pre-computed and stored independently. This approach is especially efficient when combined with the MSC Apex generative framework, as the solver execution will only re-compute behavioral representations for parts that have changed since the last solver execution. This new solver architecture is especially efficient in the context of trade studies.

MSC Apex was recently awarded NASA Tech Briefs 2014 Product of the Year and Design News Golden Mousetrap Award.

3D Systems Releases Training Modules for Simbionix Simulator

http://www.3dsystems.com
ROCK HILL, SC, Mar 25, 2015 - 3D Systems (NYSE:DDD) announced the release of two new training modules for its Simbionix ARTHRO Mentor arthroscopic training simulator: the Hip Diagnostics module and the Advanced Knee module. Together, these 3D virtual reality (VR) training solutions improve surgical preparedness and planning for complex orthopaedic procedures.

“These new modules are part of the latest 3D Systems Healthcare technology, materials and know-how that are designed to power personalized surgery,” said Kevin McAlea, Chief Operating Officer, Healthcare, 3DS. “We are dedicated to helping doctors train for, plan, practice and perform complex medical procedures and achieve better patient outcomes.”

The company’s expanding digital surgical tools include accurate 3D printed anatomical models, advanced virtual reality simulators, direct metal printing for serial production of orthopedic products and personalized 3D printed surgical guides and instruments.

The ARTHRO Mentor Hip Diagnostics, the first of its kind, was developed to meet the growing demand for arthroscopic training. Over the past decade a growing number of surgeons have turned to arthroscopy for performing hip procedures in an attempt to avoid the possible pitfalls of open surgery: scarring, blood loss, long recovery times and greater pain. Until now, the lack of available training simulators made this challenging procedure highly difficult to perfect. Today, using the ARTHRO Mentor Hip Diagnostics module, surgeons have the opportunity to experience the 70-degree arthroscope, limited maneuverability and difficult orientation from different portals in the round joint. This allows trainees and experienced surgeons alike to build critical confidence and competencies without risk to patient safety.

The Advanced Knee module provides a realistic, comprehensive training environment for diagnostics, the acquisition of basic skills and practicing a full meniscectomy procedure, which is utilized to repair a torn meniscus. The diagnostics are fully customizable, allowing surgeons to determine the level of difficulty and procedure method. Using the Advanced Knee module, surgeons get a true-to-life practice experience that helps them develop the skills and confidence for live surgery.

3DS will showcase its full range of healthcare solutions at the 2015 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) in Las Vegas, Nevada, March 25-27, in booth #1238. From the training room to the operating room, 3DS’ advanced product offerings for orthopaedic surgeons include direct metal implants, personalized surgical guides and medical models, and surgical simulation, including the newest training module additions to the ARTHRO Mentor simulator. 3DS’ display at AAOS will include the following:
  • 3D printed clinical models for surgical planning using medical image data, ranging from bone models for reconstruction to models of organs;
  • Virtual Surgical Planning (VSP System), a market-cleared, service-based approach to personalized surgery, combining 3DS’ expertise in medical imaging, surgical simulation and 3D printing;

Delcam Releases PowerSHAPE Pro 2015 R2

http://www.delcam.com
BIRMINGHAM, UK, Mar 24, 2015 - Delcam has added a number of new options for reverse engineering to its PowerSHAPE Pro software for the design of products and tooling. The 2015 R2 release of the software also includes improvements to speed up and simplify the editing of product designs to make them more suitable for manufacture.

By offering a combination of solid, surface and direct modelling, together with reverse engineering, PowerSHAPE Pro provides the most comprehensive range of design techniques available in a single CAD program. Having all the different technologies in the same package reduces the need to transfer data between multiple programs and so streamlines any product-development process that requires both reverse-engineering and CAD functionality.

PowerSHAPE Pro can connect directly to most scanning hardware to capture and display scan data in real time. The 2015 R2 version includes a new split-screen alignment option that makes it quicker and easier to combine multiple scans, taken, for example, from the opposite sides of a part. The new method also allows more accurate snapping of alignment points, giving greater accuracy in the resulting single CAD model.

PowerSHAPE Pro can be used to take cross-sections through the scan data to generate wireframe for the development of surface models. The wireframe can be simplified automatically into lines and arcs, reducing the number of points needed to describe the item and giving more precise geometry for the re-engineering of the model.

Another new option is the ability to morph a complete solid or surface model to a mesh. This can be used to compensate for spring-back when pressed parts are released from their tooling. Morphing can be used to update a nominal CAD model to match the part as it is made in reality or to modify the surfaces of the tool so that the part can be produced in the desired shape represented by the CAD model.

On the modelling side, analysis of models has been made easier as the Smart Feature Selector now displays the type and parameters of each feature interactively as the cursor is moved around the model.

In addition, the ability of the Smart Feature Selector to find, select and edit multiple similar features has been extended. Now, any number of items of the same type, not just similar features, can be edited in a single operation. For example, all the arcs within a model could be set to the same diameter or all the holes could be made the same depth.

Two enhancements have been made to the tools for the creation and editing of curves. Firstly, the Composite Curve tool has been more efficient so that it needs fewer clicks to create the curve, even when following fragmented edges. Secondly, the Re-point dialog now displays the deviation between the original curve and the new one, and it is also possible to re-point a curve to a known tolerance. This makes it even easier to create high-quality, smooth surfaces when re-engineering scan data or when re-modelling an existing design to allow it to be manufactured.

For full details, including video demonstrations, visit Learning Zone, at www.delcam.tv/ps2015/lz/EN/whats-new.asp.

Delcam Pro Services Offers Free Software for Process Automation

http://www.delcam.com
BIRMINGHAM, UK, Mar 24, 2015 - Delcam Professional Services is offering free Custom Software Core software to speed up and simplify the automation of repetitive operations in Delcam's PowerSHAPE design and reverse engineering software, and PowerMILL CAM system. The software can be downloaded from www.delcam-services.com/custom-software-core.

Even though both PowerSHAPE and PowerMILL incorporate automatic routines as part of the software, many experienced users like to customize the software to automate further standard, repetitive operations specific to their application or product range. Typically, this is done by recording a sequence of operations as a macro that can be replayed when a similar calculation, or series of calculations, is required. For more complex operations, this can be a time-consuming process and can produce an intricate string of commands that is difficult for other users to understand or to edit.

The Custom Software Core is a library of middle-ware that allows users to develop code more intuitively than using macros when interfacing .NET applications to PowerSHAPE and/or PowerMILL. The use of an Object Oriented design, together with IntelliSense in Microsoft Visual Studio, means that the software engineer can discover the functionality available when interfacing with PowerSHAPE and/or PowerMILL more easily than recording a macro and pasting together a series of commands.

An additional benefit is that the number of lines of code in the customized application will be reduced, typically by at least 50% compared to using macro commands. Rather than using lengthy blocks of macro commands that are hard for other users to read and understand, the new application comprises easy-to-read function calls, each of which can encapsulate many lines of macro commands.

Using the Custom Software Core also makes it easier to upgrade any custom application from one version of PowerSHAPE or PowerMILL to a newer version. Any changes between software releases to the macro command for a particular operation can be handled by downloading a new version of the Custom Software Core. This new version will ensure that the application will continue to function as before, without any need to recreate macros.

The Custom Software Team within Delcam Professional Services used the Custom Software Core to develop an automated production method for Yooshu, a manufacturer of custom-made sandals. The Team, which combines software development and mechanical engineering skills, was able to develop a system that interfaces with a third-party foot scanner to obtain scan data from the customer’s feet. That data is then passed to PowerSHAPE to design the sandal, and then to PowerMILL to create and post-process the toolpaths used by a robot to cut the custom shape.

To see a video showing the Yooshu process, visit https://vimeo.com/112876637.

IronCAD Releases COMPOSE Mobile 3D Collaboration App for iPad

http://www.ironcad.com
ATLANTA, GA, USA, Mar 19, 2015 - IronCAD, a leading provider of design productivity solutions, today announced IRONCAD COMPOSE Mobile for iPad, a professional 3D collaboration application that offers secure viewing, collaboration, and configuration for design data published by IronCAD's desktop suite of products.

IRONCAD COMPOSE Mobile is more than just a free viewer, it is a valuable tool for communicating 3D design concepts directly on a mobile device anywhere at any time. The download is free to everyone for the initial release; from designers wishing to share their designs to a sales person presenting and configuring their company's products at the point of sale.

Everyone in a team can leverage existing design data from any CAD system by reading it into the IronCAD Design Collaboration Suite (DCS) Desktop products and publishing securely to the COMPOSE Mobile device as files or catalogs components. From there, interrogate the geometry, add commentary, configure new assemblies, and share the designs back to IronCAD DCS users for further collaboration in real-time which can dramatically reduce time-to-market.

Making use of IronCAD's patented Smart Assembly capabilities, design intelligence can be added to components to enable automatic positioning and alignment on the iPad during Drag & Drop from catalogs. Once placed, position of the components can be adjusted to offer additional flexibility and customization to offer new design alternatives.

Point of sale users for example can configure new custom products or make adjustments to products or assemblies at the customer site to precisely meet a specific design need. They can even share the design back to IronCAD DCS along with annotation comments. IronCAD DCS users can then automatically convert the design information into precise engineering design data allowing additional modifications based on the customers feedback. Throughout the product lifecycle, designers can continue to optimize their digital models while simultaneously sharing their work with customers or sales teams using Mobile Compose. This ability dramatically improves communication between a supplier and customer and ensures that the right product is delivered in the shortest possible time. Sales cycles can be dramatically reduced with an increase of success rates.

Mobile Compose can be used to provide estimates or quotations since users have access to information such as part weight or pricing that can all be stored with the components. And if users need link with corporate ERP or other software applications, IronCAD can customize Mobile Compose specifically to meet unique needs or requirements.

Cary O'Connor, Vice President of Marketing at IronCAD, stated, "Our customers will enjoy the flexibility of accessing their models and catalog content anywhere. Furthermore, with COMPOSE on their mobile device, anyone can communicate and configure directly with their customers using an application that is simple to use even for non-designers!"

Stratasys to Launch Objet260 Dental Selection 3D Printer at IDS 2015, Germany

 www.stratasys.com
MN, USA & REHOVOT, Israel, Mar 13, 2015 - Stratasys Ltd. (Nasdaq:SSYS) a leading global provider of 3D printing and additive manufacturing solutions, is introducing the Objet260 Dental Selection 3D Printer at the International Dental Show this week in Cologne, Germany. Leveraging Stratasys' unique triple-jetting technology, the Objet260 Dental Selection raises the bar in 3D printed dental model realism to improve the accuracy and efficacy of digital dentistry.

The Objet260 Dental Selection 3D Printer introduces advanced triple-jetting technology to dental labs for superior throughput and model realism

The versatile new 3D printer is designed to help mid- to large-sized dental and orthodontic labs grow their business by producing realistic models with true-to-life look and feel as part of their end-to-end digital dentistry workflow, including intra-oral scanners.

Its ability to build diverse models with multiple materials on one tray, in one print job, increases productivity which can further improve profitability.

"We are using the Objet260 Dental Selection 3D Printer to produce realistic 3D printed gingiva masks and models we couldn't do before. We have not had 3D printed dental models that so closely resemble the actual teeth and gums," said Stefan Remplbauer, general manager of Austria-based 3DMedicalPrint. "The initial reactions from our customers, which include dental technicians, dentists and surgeons, have been extremely positive. This is definitely going to help set 3DMedicalPrint apart from our competitors."

Unprecedented true-to-life dental model realism

Pivotal to the capabilities of the Objet260 Dental Selection is the ability to enable dental and orthodontic labs to enjoy unprecedented realism of the stone models. This permits the production of life-like gum textures for precise functional testing, as well as a wide range of shades for customized, color matching.

The Objet260 Dental Selection 3D Printer is compatible with all PolyJet dental materials, plus an array of dental-specific material palettes to produce life-like colors and textures for teeth and gums. This allows users to serve a broader range of dental applications with a single system, reducing equipment costs. These usages span implant testing with stone models that mimic the look and feel of real gingiva for accurate functional evaluation, as well as models with rigid features that require gum-like materials. Labs can print surgical guides directly from CBCT scan data, with high-definition tooth, root and nerve-canal anatomy rendered in contrasting materials to help prevent dental nerve injury.

"With the introduction of the Objet260 Dental Selection, Stratasys is closing the loop in digital dentistry by providing a 3D printer that can take the color digital file resulting from the intra-oral scanner and transform it into a color, multi-texture dental model. This directly contributes to better accuracy for the dental practitioners and better understanding for the patients," said Avi Cohen, Director of Global Dental at Stratasys. "For any dental or orthodontic lab looking for a competitive edge today and tomorrow, the Objet260 Dental Selection should be at the top of their list."

Vero to Launch WorkNC v24 at Industrie 2015 in Lyon, France

http://www.verosoftware.com
GLOUCESTERSHIRE, UK, Mar 12, 2015 - Vero Software is launching the latest release of WorkNC at the Industrie trade fair in Lyon. With a wide range of new and enhanced functionality, Product Manager Miguel Johan says visitors will be astounded at the extent WorkNC Version 24 improves CAM operator productivity and machining quality even further.

“The new Rest Material Display has been enhanced, transforming it into a genuine analysis tool to aid CAM programmers in their perpetual quest to reduce machining preparation times.” It allows for the different amounts of rest material left on the model, to be rapidly evaluated according to user defined color ranges. On large models and even on extremely complex components it is easy for users to determine the small zones or pockets that still need to be machined.

Other innovative features include symmetry functions, importing 2D features directly from native NX files, quicker collision calculations, and new functions for working on STL models.

“Industrie is the most important trade fair in France, expected to attract over 20,000 visitors, a quarter being engineers, 21 per cent corporate managers and 17 per cent departmental managers. In other words, decision makers and prime contractors, for whom WorkNC and the other Vero CAD/CAM software on show, can provide the optimum solution for their requirements.”

Visitors to booth Y 87 in Hall 6 at the Eurexpo Lyon Exhibition Center from April 7 - 10 will see that WorkNC Version 24 features a set of standard collision detection functions covering the machining environment, tool holder, stock and machining center. “For 3-axis and 3+2 axis the WorkNC collision detection module indicates the shortest possible cutter than can be used. For 5-axis the Auto5 module determines the best possible conditions for a user-defined cutting tool. Special attention’s been given to optimize cutting conditions for features such as rubs and narrow slots.”

Re-machining strategies have been completely revamped, giving greater precision in detecting the areas to be re-machined, smoother trajectories, and improved surface finish quality.

A number of of components and products programmed with WorkNC will feature on the booth, including an engine block and a motorsport prototype wheel carrier, and a pilot’s helmet, along with the chassis of a Tech 3 competition motorbike competing in the Moto2 World Championships machined on a 5-axis DMG Mori Seiki milling center by Aravis Precision.

The exhibition also sees the French launch of Edgecam 2015 R1, which includes a brand new Waveform roughing cycle for turning. Based on the successful milling waveform technology, the toolpath maintains a constant cutting load. The release introduces further Workflow enhancements by supporting multiple setups for both milling and turning, meaning the component, stock and fixtures, can be passed to new machining sequences. It promotes the use of a single CAM file to house multiple machining setups, ensuring the stock remains associative between setups.

The Wire EDM product is now available in Workflow, and Edgecam 2015 R1 offers full machine simulation, including stock and cross-section display.

WorkPLAN 2015 R2 will also be on display - showing project management processes, 3D integration, and CAD data integration from quotation to shop floor - as will VISI 21, one of the world's leading PC-based CAD CAM software solutions for mold and tooling design and production.

And WorkXplore 3D 2015 is a major new release of the software which contains many features usually only found in CAD systems, enabling the user to perform diagnostics, create assembly instructions and prepare the production of 3D models. Technical Manager Philippe Deletang says it focuses on new functions and improvements, providing solutions for mobility, realistic animations, and processing large files.

“Thanks to the new Xplore Mobile application, geometric items - models 3D models, and ancillary data such as annotations, measurements and wire-frames - can now be exported to Android and IOS mobile platforms, providing WorkXplore 3D data to be accessed on the move.”

The animation engine has been completely reviewed to make animation sequences more realistic, while simpler to create.

A new batch conversion process switches large native standard CAD files, or a large number of files, to WorkXplore 3D format. In previous versions of the software the application could not be used during the conversion process, but the new tool means the file is converted in the background, while the user continues to work as normal.

WorkNC Version 24, WorkXplore 3D 2015, WorkPLAN 2015 R2, VISI V21, Edgecam 2015 R1, all on display on booth Y 87 in Hall 6. For more information, visit http://www.verosoftware.com.
